Our Core Values
16 CORE VALUES
1. God is on our side. (Lu. 2:14; 4:18-19; Ro. 2:4; 5:8; 8:28) This is the Good News of Jesus Christ
2. People need God. (Ac. 4:12; Ro. 3:20; 3:23; Ga. 2:21) We proclaim the Substitutionary Atonement of Christ
3. We’re the only Jesus some will ever see. (Mt. 5:13-16; Ac. 1:8; 1 Pe. 2:12) When people look for God, what they see is the Church
4. It's not about me. (Lu. 15:4-7; 19:10; Ro. 12:10) The Church exists primarily for the benefit of non-members
5. Don't expect non-believers to act like believers. (Is. 53:6; Jn. 14:26; Ro. 1:21; 3:23) They can’t
6. It's okay to have/ask questions. (Jn. 20:24-28; 1 Pe. 5:7) God has big shoulders – He can take it
7. The Bible is the primary way God speaks to us. (Ps. 119:9-11; 119:105; 2 Ti. 3:16-17) God's Word is sufficient and authoritative
8. The most valuable use of our time is prayer. (Ac. 2:42; Eph. 6:18; Phil. 4:6) Prayer builds relationship
9. Membership brings responsibility. (1 Pe. 5:8; He. 10:25) Anyone can attend, but membership requires commitment
10. We need each other. (1 Co. 12:27; Ga. 3:28; 1 Pe. 2:9) Everyone's a "10" at something
11. People are more important than programs. (Lu. 8:14; 10:38-42) Don't let activity replace relationship
12. What you believe should make a difference in how you live.
(Ro. 12:1-2; Php. 3:12-14; 1 Pe. 2:9) We are called to be a Royal Priesthood, a Holy Nation, a people belonging to God
13. We cannot out-give God. (Mal. 3:10-11; Mt. 25:14-30; 2 Co. 9:7) Giving is our primary testimony that we trust God
14. It's not "if," but "WHO" we worship. (Ps. 22:3; Re. 4:11) We were created to worship; it's what we do
15. Every car (or church) needs a steering wheel, a gas pedal, and brakes. (He. 13:17) Without a steering wheel we have no direction; without a gas pedal we gain no momentum;
without brakes our momentum could hurl us off a cliff
16. This is a "Church of God (Anderson)" congregation.
We enjoy a rich and theologically sound heritage
in
the Wesleyan (holiness)/Arminian (free will) tradition
the Church of God
There is some understandable confusion about our name. There are over 200 different denominations that have chosen the name Church of God. Let us introduce you to The Church of God (Anderson).
The year was AD 30. The place was Jerusalem. It was the Day of Pentecost and God's Church was established that day. The Holy Spirit came in a new and unusual way to indwell and empower the followers of Jesus Christ
- both to bless their lives and to make them a blessing to all peoples of the earth. Luke, Paul, and Timothy refer often in scripture to this universal Church* that Jesus Christ founded and keeps, in the name of the Father.
Since that day, believers in various groups at various times have been called by an assortment of names. In 1881, one particular group chose the name Church of God because that is what they wanted to be. Today we are sometimes collectively known as the Church of God Reformation Movement with North American general offices in Anderson, Indiana.
The Church of God (Anderson) consists of more than 7,000 local congregations with 800,000 Christians in eighty-nine nations of the world. We are Wesleyan/Arminian in theology, and we seek to emphasize the unity of all those who follow Jesus Christ, whatever the name of their church group. We are convinced that what we believe should make a difference in how we live. We attempt to serve and honor Christ by being faithful disciples, living out his Lordship as we understand it from Scripture and as led by the Holy Spirit.
God is doing some marvelous things in and through the lives of Church of God people around the world. As you become more familiar with the Church of God, we hope you will sense the commitment and character of this company of people who feel and claim a direct link with the Church initiated by Jesus Christ on the Day of Pentecost.
Our prayer is that God will bless you as
you seek to know and serve him.
